Rolf is dyslexic and shows how his assistance program reads text aloud on borger.dk and danskespil.dk – if it could work.

Jesper is blind but can using the program JAWS seamlessly use rejseplanen.dk. However, it is worse with danskespil.dk which is completely useless for him.

Accessibility




The project has as its primary objective:

  1. Bring focus to accessibility on the Internet.
  2. Communicate the challenges that users with disabilities experience online.
  3. Enable web professionals to see the world from the perspective of a user with a disabilities.



Project implementation
Six users with various disabilities participated in the project. Two blind, two partially sighted and two dyslexics were asked to perform tasks on Danish websites while they and the screen was filmed. Participants also talked about themselves, their disabilities and the challenges it brings. Among the tested sites are kk.dk, dr.dk, borger.dk, danskespil.dk, telia.dk, arla.dk and rejseplanen.dk
We have cut the video footage for each participant along with 4-6 minute film that conveys their unique experience.

Why
Availability on public and private Danish websites could be much better than it is today. Two reasons for the lag is lack of focus from managements side and lack of knowledge from the staff side.
The movies should provide focus and understanding. They should aim to help web professionals to think about accessibility in from the start, next time they develop a web solution.
The films must communicate the online challenges that people with disabilities experience on a present way, which video media is capable of. They shall also provide insight into the practical implications that aids – such as speech synthesis – poses. Movies should not replace, but serve as a complement to the extensive resources of the regulations and recommendations contained on, among other sensus.dk and IT & Telestyrelsens website.
